The One Thing I Needed to Know About WordPress 2.1 Upgrade

January 27, 2007 – 12:00 am
I work at a startup in SF and during my grueling 10-14 hour work days I try to slam in as much reading and blogging time as possible. But as we (who have worked in or with startups) know, even just reading and posting a brainless two paragraph post can be a sometimes daunting task. Certainly upgrading to the new version of WordPress at 1am after an arduous day should be something I could have accomplished with success, since writing a post about the recent developments in AdWords & Panama seemed like a hiking a 10 mile mountain trail.

But in that early morning hour I learned the one requirement I needed to know about but had (somehow) missed throughe all th reviews of the upgrade yesterday. After installing the new version of WordPress and seeing my site in disarray I learned that you need to be running MySql 4.0 to upgrade. How did I miss this??? I was so excited by the new widgets and functionality to WP (caching being the #1 – I’m poor and run on a slow server) that I completely overlooked the system requirements. Well, at least I have something to do on Saturday morning; I wanted to go for a jog but instead I will be upgrading my MySql – then I’ll get the new WP installed.

So, for those of you have not upgraded yet – be sure to read all of the reviews of the new WordPress and get excited. But don’t make the same mistake I made at 1am – know what version of MySql you are running.

Good luck and upgrade now!

For those who don’t like reading, let the robot read to you.
